Tradition

Tradition

Coastal forests and arid lands

a life of subsistence

simple folk in love with the earth

who weren’t trained for resistance

Before white people entered Australia

Kooris would go walkabout

having mastered the art of survival

by sussing nature out

Without the need of possessions

living off the land as they wandered

knowing the land like the back of their hand

they conserved instead of squandered

They knew the art of burning off

so pastures would improve,

So much land to care for

kept them on the move

They understood the seasons

what grew where and when

knowing when to leave each place

and when to come again

They managed their environment

in ways that would sustain

their people for eternity

and preserve the family chain

For over forty thousand years

they kept their tribal way

each tribe had its own area

and own lore to obey

Their natural heightened vision

eased their hunting life

Wallabies and roos were tracked

over rough ground without strife

A race of sensitive people

senses tuned so fine

perceiving nature’s patterns

reading every sign

Nature as their teacher

let them live without compunction

classifying living things

according to their function

They know not only nature’s ways

Other worlds they also see

Dreamtime is the path they use

Initiation holds the key

More than merely pictures

that happen during sleep

Beyond the myths and legends

that storytellers keep

The Dreaming is their access

to a greater, inner world

where higher teachings are received

and deeper truths unfurled

A path to full humaneness

through wisdom, truth and love

The creation of elders

under guidance from above

An ancient, timeless culture

so much to give and share

Traditional Australians knew

how to live and care
